246th Birthday celebration of Raja Rammohun Roy

Rammohun Roy was lauded for his appeal on self-confidence, castigating superstitions, and countered prevalent orthodoxy and stood for inner unity, appraisal of monotheism and women emancipation. He was one of the key personalities of “Bengal Renaissance” known to be at the forefront of progressive forces. He made a successful attempt to modernise the Indian society. Belong to a Brahmin family in Bengal, many of his acts was against his caste and what was practiced in the name of religion. Rammohun Roy was known for his major contribution in religious and social reform in modern age India. His call for Spiritual Enlightenment made him an iconic figure of the modern India. He was passionate for liberty and rights and emphasized on natural rights. No individual of his caliber is in public life these days, but the absence of such persons is being deeply felt to protect the spirit which Rammohun Roy infused in his countrymen.

On 22nd May 2019, Sadharan Brahmo Samaj observed this great man’s 248th Birth anniversary through garlanding and prayer at the footstep of the statue of Raja Rammohun Roy at Kolkata Maidan in association with Govt. of West Bengal and Kolkata Municipal Corporation. The statue was given a floral decoration. The prayer was offered by Smt. Sutapa Roychowdhury and the hymns befitting the occasion were performed by the students of Brahmo Balika Shikshalaya, Montessori section. Homage was paid by placing wraths by Sadharan Brahmo Samaj and all its units, Brahmo Balika Shikshalaya, Brahmo Sammilan Samaj, Bharatvarsiya Brahmo Mandir and Harinavi Brahmo Samaj.

Annual Utsava of Baniban Brahmo Samaj

Annual Utsava on the occasion of Foundation day of Baniban Brahmo Samaj was observed on 26th May at Baniban Brahmo Samaj organised by Sadharan Brahmo Samaj and local Brahmo families at Baniban. Divine service was conducted by Sri Arup Kumar Das and hymns were sung by Smt. Rita Chakrabarty, Smt. Mousumi Chatterjee, Smt. Kasturi Chakraborty and others conducted by Smt. Rita Chakraborty. About 50 people including 20 people from Kolkata attended this occasion. All participants joined for lunch arranged at Brahmo Samaj Balya Bhavan.

Rammohun Roy’s 248th Brithday Celebration

On 22nd May, 2019 at 6.30 pm a programme was organised to commemorate 248th birth anniversary of Raja Rammohun Roy. Smt. Kamalika Bandopadhyay offered a brief prayer and chant slokas from Upanishad. Sri Prasun Ganguly spoke on life and works of Raja Rammohun Roy and founding of Brahmo Samaj. Brahmasangeets written by Rammohun Roy were sung by Smt. Kamalika Bandopadhyay, Smt. Sarbani Roy, Sri Soumen Banerjee, Sri Pramit Basu, Sri Manaswasi Choudhuri. Smt. Supriya Mukherjee delivered a lecture on Rammohun Roy. At the end Sri Prasun Ganguly displayed the pictures of Rammohun Roy’s residences in London and narrated briefly regarding his own experience on them while he was visiting those places.

Satyendranath Tagore’s Birthday Celebration

On 1st June 2019, at 6.30 in the evening 177th birthday of Satyendranath Tagore was observed. Sri Arindrajit Saha offered prayer and informed on life and works of Satyendranath. Some Brahmasangeet written by Satyendranath Tagore were sung by Smt. Kamalika Bandopadhyay, Sri Arindrajit Saha and others. Sri Prasun Ganguly informed on the history of the song “Sabe mile gao tahar mohima” written by Satyendranath Tagore. Smt. Supriya Mukherjee narrated briefly on Satyendranath and Gyanodanandini.
